The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge- February 27, 1776
The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, fought between North Carolina Patriot and Loyalist militia forces, demonstrates the bitter internal divisions that marked the American Revolution. The Loyalist, mostly Scottish Highlanders wielding broadswords, charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge, nearly a thousand North Carolina Patriots waited quietly with cannons and muskets poised to fire. Expecting to find only a small Patriot force, the Loyalist advanced across the bridge. Shots rang out and 30 to 70 Loyalist lay wounded or dead, including Lt. Col. Donald McLeod, who led the charge. Stunned, outgunned, and leaderless, some of the Loyalist surrendered, while others retreated in confusion.
Moores Creek is the site of the first Patriot victory in the American Revolution and the site of the last Scottish Highland broadsword charge. The victory ended British authority in the colony and stalled a full-scale British invasion of the South for nearly four years. The resulting Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776, instructed North Carolina’s delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence; it was the first American colony to take such action in writing.

Jean Marie Cardinal - Escaping British troops at Dubuque in the early spring of 1780, Cardinal undertook an epic journey by canoe to St. Louis in time to warn the residents of the British. Together with less than 300 residents, he then fought and died in a battle that crushed British plans in the Mississippi Valley. This was the western-most battle of the American Revolution.

The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge – February 27, 1776
The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, fought between North Carolina Patriot and Loyalist militia forces, demonstrates the bitter internal divisions that marked the American Revolution. The Loyalists, mostly Scottish Highlanders wielding broadswords, charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge, nearly a thousand North Carolina Patriots waited quietly with cannons and muskets poised to fire. Expecting to find only a small Patriot force, the Loyalist advanced across the bridge. Shots rang out and 30 to 70 Loyalists lay wounded or dead, including Lt. Col. Donald McLeod, who led the charge. Stunned, outgunned, and leaderless, some of the Loyalists surrendered, while others retreated in confusion.
Moores Creek is the site of the first Patriot victory in the American Revolution and the site of the last Scottish Highland broadsword charge. The victory ended British authority in the colony and stalled a full-scale British invasion of the South for nearly four years. The resulting Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776, instructed North Carolina’s delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence; it was the first American colony to take such action.
Vendors will be available for lunch at the Battleground. In addition, around 11:30 AM following the event a fund-raising lunch will be served at the Currie Community Baptist Church. The cost will be $10 per person; reservations for the meal must be made with John Thornhill by 7 Feb 2018. Cell phone contact: (910) 284-0232. Seating is limited; reservations for the meal are required.

The Kentucky Society invites you to join them in commemoration of the 239th Anniversary of the Battle of Blue Licks. This will include a memorial service held at the Battle of Blue Lick Monument in the Blue Licks Battlefield State Park.
On 19 August 1782, American Militia under the command of Colonel John Todd with subordinate officers Lt. Col. Stephen Trigg and Lt. Col. Daniel Boone were led into an ambush and defeated by a combined force of American Indians and British Rangers. The battle, one of the last in the American Revolution, took place on a hill next to the Licking River in present day Kentucky. The vastly outnumbered American force of approximately 182 suffered casualties of approximately 72 killed and 11 captured.

Special Congress
Washington D.C. metropolitan area
At the December 6, 2020 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Trustees approved a recommendation of the Executive Committee to hold a Special Congress for the purpose of considering proposed amendments to Articles V and VIII of the Constitution as proposed by the Bylaws, Rules and Resolutions Committee and the Executive Committee. Notice of the amendments to be considered was mailed from Headquarters on January 6, 2021, as required by Article VIII of the Constitution. The primary purpose of the amendments is to permit attendance at future Congresses by alternative means if authorized by a 2/3 vote of the Board of Trustees. This would enable the SAR to hold its annual Congress during a pandemic or other national emergency in the future.
The Special Congress will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at 10 a.m., in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, with the precise location to be determined by the Special Congress Chairman and notice of the precise location to be given to all Trustees, State Presidents and State Secretaries no later than Saturday, February 13, 2021.

Last Naval Battle of the Revolutionary War
Greeting from the Sons, Daughter and Children of the American Revolution. We invited you to participated in this year’s ceremony to commemorate the 236th Anniversary of the last Naval battle of the Revolutionary War.
On March 10, 1783 two Continental Navy ships the Duc De Lauzun and the Alliance were in route from Havana Cuba to Philadelphia with 72,000 Spanish coins along the east coast of Florida when three British warships the Sybil, the Alarm and the Tobago spotted the Continental ships. With the Duc De Lauzun being loaded with the precious cargo, Captain John Green could not out run the British. The Sybil caught up to the Duc De Lauzun and exchanged gunfire. Meanwhile Captain John Barry maneuvered the Alliance between the Duc De Lauzun and British warship Sybil. Once the Alliance was alongside the Sybil and just yards away, he ordered his crew to fire upon the Sybil. Being outgunned, the Sybil changed course and followed the other British ships Alarm and Tobago.

The 245th Anniversary
of the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot
May 13th-18th 2020
In the summer of 1775, the American Colonies are in revolt and the British have responded to the growing crisis in the colonies with a blockade of American ports. The blockade hurt Bermuda as the islands already had a shortage of food, putting the islanders at risk of starvation. Bermudians were divided and while most of the island’s population remained loyal the English Crown, there were many who sympathized with the Continental Congress and its fight for independence.
Galvez Day - Commemorating the Battle of Pensacola
Pensacola, Florida
Galvez Day
Commemorating the longest siege of the American Revolution, the 1781 Battle of Pensacola
The Siege and Victory at Pensacola is recognized as a major battle in support of the United States' struggle for independence from Great Britain. While no American units were involved, the victory completed a series of victories by Spanish units under the command of General Bernardo de Galvez which eliminated British military control of the lower Mississippi Rivers and Gulf Coast. That loss of control was a significant factor in Great Britain ceding the land between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains to the United States and the colonies of East and West Florida to Spain as part of the 1783 Peace Treaty.

2019 Atlantic Middle States Association Conference
On behalf of the Delaware Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, your hosts for the 2019 Atlantic Middle States Association Conference, I cordially welcome you to Delaware. We are delighted and honored to have the President General and most of the national officers with us. The Delaware Society hopes it has taken advantage of every opportunity to enable you to enjoy the conference and "The First State." While you are with us in Delaware, we invite you to take a moment to explore Delaware's rich history, pristine beaches, and of course our tax-free shopping.
As you will see from the agenda included in your registration package, the Delaware Society, in conjunction with Vice Presidents General Sutton and Goebel, has planned an exciting and informative program.
The Hilton Christiana/Wilmington is conveniently located to a number of other attractions in Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania, including the Brandywine River Museum (Wyeth family and American artwork), Longwood Gardens (Pierre S. DuPont's home and gardens), The Hagley Museum (E.I. DuPont's gunpowder works), Nemours Mansion & Gardens (A.I. DuPont's home), Winterthur Museum, the Delaware Art Museum and Fort Delaware (a Civil War era fort constructed in the middle of the Delaware River).
In addition to the Brandywine Battlefield, for those interested, Elkton, Cooch's Bridge, Paoli, Philadelphia, Germantown, Valley Forge, and many other sites connected to the British Philadelphia Campaign of 1777-1778, are within easy reach. The colonial city of New Castle, first capital of Delaware and "The Williamsburg of the North" is only twenty minutes away. The nearby city of Wilmington - founded as a Swedish colony in 1638 - contains sites commemorating the first Swedish settlement (Fort Christina State Park on E. 7th Street, including a replica of the ship Kalmar Nyckel) and French assistance during the American Revolution (the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route and the Wilmington Opera House).
We truly hope that you enjoy your time in Delaware and experience everything this Small Wonder has to offer.

2019 SAR Annual Conference on the American Revolution
present
June 14-16, 2019
Mary Silliman wrote in 1776 that she had “acted the heroine as well as my dear Husband [General Gold Selleck Silliman, Connecticut militia] the hero.” Not all women (or men) acted heroically in the war, but they did act, not just react, and their agency informs this conference. How did women fight the Revolution – fight for it, fight against it, and fight in it? This conference intends to examine women warriors, followers, and activists from many perspectives – American and British, Patriot and Loyalist, free and enslaved. This conference will examine the words, actions, and influence of women in the War for American Independence.
Women Waging War in the American Revolution will be chaired by Holly A. Mayer, Associate Professor of History at Duquesne University and the 2019 SAR Distinguished Scholar

The resulting Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776, instructed North Carolina’s delegates the Continental Congress to vote for independence; it was the first American colony to take such action.

The 2017 SAR Annual Conference on the American Revolution
June 9-11, 2017
John Adams famously wrote “I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy … in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick.” The comment seems to describe the story of the family in the generations from John to Henry Adams. Yet the Adamses, whatever else they did, were political men and women. In 1821, an aging John Adams wrote his grandson George Washington Adams, an aspiring poet, that he must study politics, for “without some knowledge of it you will be always in confusion, blown about by every wind.” Politics were central to the story of the Adams family from the start, and at the foundation of the family’s politics was the American Revolution, a revolution that would create an American republic. With that in mind, the 2017 SAR Annual Conference proposes to explore the Adams family’s understanding of the nature, meaning, and significance of the American Revolution over the generations from John and Abigail to Henry and Brooks Adams. It will focus on the way their understanding of the American Revolution shaped their writings and their works from the Writs of Assistance Case in 1761 to Henry Adams’ death in the early 20th Century.
Please join us as the 2017 SAR Annual Conference on the American Revolution considers

An RSVP is available at www.ncssargeorgewashington.org/GGWC/Major_Reading_Blount_grave_marking.pdf
Major Reading Blount (22 Feb 1757 – 12 Oct 1807) was an officer in the Continental Army. After news came of Lexington and Concord in 1776, the North Carolina assembly met in Hillsborough and divided the state into military districts. Reading Blount, who was then nineteen and had as his only previous military experience drilling with the local militia, was commissioned a captain in the Third North Carolina Regiment on 16 Apr. 1776. Captain Blount became a major on 12 May 1778. In June of that year he was transferred to the Fifth North Carolina Continental Line. On 1 Jan. 1781, he was again transferred, this time to the First Continental Line. He served for nearly seven years. At the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 Mar. 1781, Blount was cited for bravery. Again at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, on 8 Sept. 1781, was recognized by General Nathanael Greene for bravery beyond the call of duty.
