Artifacts approved for Repatriation or Sale by Auction

NOTICE OF REPATRIATION OR SALE BY AUCTION OF APPROVED NSSAR ARTIFACTS

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Board of Trustees of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (“NSSAR”) previously authorized the deaccession and repatriation and/or sale by auction of certain artifacts currently in the NSSAR’s possession.

PLEASE TAKE FURTHER NOTICE, that in connection with the directive from the Board of Trustees, the NSSAR Museum Board has listed, and reviewed, each of the 569 artifacts from the SAR Museum Collection that will be repatriated or sold at auction. This list identifies each artifact by:  category, name, and identification number. A description of the artifact is also included. The list of artifacts that will be repatriated or sold at auction can be accessed at:  https://sar.org/news-deaccession-artifacts

PLEASE TAKE FURTHER NOTICE, that the Museum Board is seeking to connect with each artifact’s donor, or a family member if the original donor is deceased, to determine whether the donor’s (or the donor’s family’s) wishes with respect to the artifact.

PLEASE TAKE FURTHER NOTICE, that artifacts not repatriated prior to August 1, 2018, will be sold at auction. A separate notice identifying those artifacts to be sold at auction, and providing the date of such auction, will be available after August 1, 2018. Proceeds from the auction will be allocated for the development and direct care of the SAR Museum Collection.

Description: blue and white round plate depicting The Old Church Tower, Jamestown, VA in center around edge are scenes of Captain John Smith, Blair Tomb, Princess Pocahontas and ships that brought the founder to the nation. It was passed to his daughter Margaret Maria Livingston upon his death in 1813. Then it passed to Margaret's son Eugene A. Livingston, who gave it to his daughter Julia Livingston who passed it to the donors grandmother Julia Livingston Delafield Longfellow, her niece. His grandmother gave it to his aunt Julia Livingston Delefield Fiske upon death in 1963 whom he purchased it from in 1971. Professionally sealed in a white and red plastic bag.

Cockade with button, 1821 pattern eagle, chin scales with star side buttons. All metal trim is original 19th remounted on new leather. Shako was received with the fiber reinforcement in top and front seam. Dated approximately 1821-35 and was mostly used by militia as very few of the regular army shakos had the decorated lower leather band. The shako was sent for trim by H.L. LeCompte Jr.

A sticker on it says "J & W Ridgeway Catskill Moss, Kascuiska's Tomb. Note taped on back says "Korciusko, Thaddeus 1746-1817. Polish general offered his services to the American Revolution, 1777, Saratoga Campaign. Returned to Poland and uprising against Russians and Prussians unsuccessful. Imprisoned, freed in 1796. Went to U.S. in 1798, then to France. Died in Switzerland, buried in Cracow Kosh-choos??ike.
